Aventurine is a form of quartz that has inclusions of mica, hematite, and goethite, with the mica inclusions being the most common, giving it a silvery green sheen. Other colors of aventurine include colorless, yellow, orange, violet, blue, and brown. The most common color variant by far, is green. Superficially, polished aventurine may look a bit similar to other minerals, like jade, or green calcite.
Being derived from quartz, aventurine has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which is considered as very hard. The main locations where it is mined are India, Brazil, China, Germany, and South Africa. Over the years, it has been used as flooring material, statues, sculptures, and as jewelry.
All aventurine is found as masses, and therefore, small tumbled stones or palm stones are the most usual forms that are available. Aventurine is a calming stone and helps balance the yin and yang aspects. Merely holding a palm stone in your hand can induce feelings of calmness and serenity.
The energy is gentle and comforting, and this makes aventurine a good alternative for people who find the usual quartz crystal energy too intense. Being readily available and cheap, green aventurine is commonly used as a green substitute to jade. Many carvings and sculptures are now made from green aventurine, rather than jade.
Aventurine in general promotes self-confidence, decisiveness, proactive action, and leadership qualities. Green aventurine (the most common variety of aventurine) is also great for the heart chakra area, where it can be used to clear blockages and protect the heart chakra from negative intrusions. Besides this, green aventurine is also believed to be a “lucky stone”, especially in the East. It is believed that green aventurine helps with money luck, in a similar fashion to jade. The other colored varieties of aventurine can be used for their respective corresponding chakras, especially for crystal healing work.
Green aventurine has been used to treat disorders of the lungs, and heart. It works to restore balance between the physical and the etheric bodies. Orange aventurine benefits the sexual organs and blood circulation. In general, aventurine can be used to improve the functioning of the vital endocrine glands, thus improving overall body health.
